Ann Arbor, Michigan – A dozen Michigan universities have been included in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings of national universities for 2026. The University of Michigan (UM) leads the state, securing the No. 20 overall ranking, a tie with Carnegie Mellon University, University of Notre Dame, and Washington University in St. Louis.

UM has been recognized as the No. 3 top public university in the nation, further distinguished by its No. 4 ranking in business programs. In specialized categories, UM excelled, ranking No. 1 in management and marketing programs, as well as No. 5 in psychology and undergraduate engineering programs.

Michigan State University (MSU) follows at No. 64, a slight decline from last year’s No. 63 and No. 60 two years ago. However, MSU remains highly regarded, ranking No. 29 among top public schools. MSU also continues to hold the title of the top-ranked school for undergraduate supply chain management for the 15th consecutive year.

Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) is currently ranked No. 158, which marks a drop of 10 spots from the previous year. Michigan Tech has achieved Research 1 status and collaborates with UM, MSU, and Wayne State University (WSU) through an initiative known as Research Universities of Michigan.

WSU has maintained its ranking at No. 179 in the national list. The University of Detroit Mercy, a private university in Detroit, saw an improvement, rising six spots to No. 183. Meanwhile, Grand Valley State University moved up two spots to tie with private Andrews University in Berrien Springs at No. 242.

Central Michigan University, however, experienced a decline, falling to No. 283 from No. 259 last year, and ranks No. 157 among top public schools. Out of Michigan’s 15 public universities, a total of 10 have made the national rankings, alongside two private institutions.

On a national scale, the top five universities include Princeton University at No. 1, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and a four-way tie at No. 4 with Stanford University and Yale University.

The U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Colleges ranking evaluates nearly 1,700 institutions based on 13 to 17 measures of academic quality.
