Detroit – Authorities are actively searching for two missing men as the city faces a concerning rise in missing persons reports. The Detroit Police Department has reported that more than 3,100 cases of missing persons have been recorded in 2025, marking an 18% increase from the previous year.

One of the missing individuals, Maurice Carter Jr., a 24-year-old man, was last seen on Saturday, May 10, 2025. He left his home on the 14400 block of Braile Street to go to work but did not return. Carter was reportedly wearing a ‘Little Caesars’ shirt, blue jeans, and brown ‘Timberland’ boots at the time of his disappearance. The Detroit Police Department’s 6th Precinct is requesting anyone with information regarding Carter’s whereabouts to contact them at 313-596-5640. Anonymous tips can also be reported to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up.

Another missing person case involves Maurice Jones, a 71-year-old man who went missing on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. He left his residence located on the 18900 block of Rosemont Avenue and has not been heard from since. Jones was last seen wearing a gray button-down shirt, gray dress pants, and black dress shoes. Authorities also report that he suffers from schizophrenia. The investigation into his case is being handled by the Detroit Police Department’s 8th Precinct, and tips can be relayed at 313-596-5840.

The rising number of missing persons cases in Detroit raises alarm, particularly among community members. A significant portion of the 2025 cases involves vulnerable individuals, including the elderly with dementia and those experiencing mental health challenges. Out of the reported cases this year, over 2,900 have led to successful recoveries, which highlights the community’s ongoing concern regarding missing individuals, especially children and teenagers.

This increase in missing persons cases is partly attributed to a noted rise in runaways, which the police describe as youth who leave home without parental or caregiver permission. The overall situation reflects broader trends observed nationally, where missing persons reports increased by approximately 3% from 2022 to 2023.

In response to this alarming trend, the Detroit Police Department is stepping up its efforts to raise awareness about missing individuals in the community. Initiatives include utilizing social media platforms and email alerts to keep the public informed. The department emphasizes the importance of community involvement in preventing these occurrences and encourages families to maintain clear knowledge of children’s whereabouts and social circles.

While many cases result in safe recoveries, there have been tragic outcomes as well, with reports indicating that 25 confirmed fatalities have occurred among individuals who were reported missing. Nevertheless, most missing persons are found and returned safely, underscoring the necessity for community vigilance.

The rising number of missing persons cases reflects both a local concern in Detroit and a national challenge. Detroit Police Commissioner has expressed alarm regarding the increasing reports and the critical issues at play, reiterating the significance of community engagement. As the search for Maurice Carter Jr. and Maurice Jones continues, the police remain hopeful for their safe return and urge residents to stay vigilant.
