Detroit – A man suffered serious injuries on Tuesday evening after being hit by a vehicle while he was changing a flat tire on the Southfield Freeway. The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, close to Schoolcraft Road.
Authorities from the Michigan State Police (MSP) responded to the scene to find the injured man lying on the ground. Despite his serious condition, he was alert and breathing. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
According to preliminary investigations, the man was changing a tire on the right shoulder of the freeway while his wife remained inside their vehicle. As he was working on the tire, a Chevrolet Impala, traveling northbound, struck him. The driver of the Impala, identified as a 52-year-old man from Plymouth, exhibited signs of intoxication when questioned by officers on the scene. Consequently, he was arrested and taken to a hospital for a blood draw for toxicology analysis.
The investigation into this hit-and-run incident is ongoing. The MSP is urging drivers to refrain from operating vehicles while impaired and advising individuals faced with flat tires on highways to call 911 for assistance, rather than attempting to handle the situation themselves.
This incident highlights a concerning trend within Michigan, as there has been a notable increase in pedestrian-involved crashes this year. Stats indicate that in 2023, Michigan has recorded a total of 2,114 crashes involving vehicles and pedestrians. Of those, 179 were fatal, leading to 183 deaths. Wayne County has emerged as the area with the highest number of such incidents, accounting for 686 crashes and 60 fatalities so far this year.
The MSP has been proactive in addressing these alarming statistics, emphasizing the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to remain vigilant, especially in areas where pedestrians are present. They encourage drivers to always remain sober and focused behind the wheel to prevent further tragedies.
