Grosse Pointe Woods – Longtime resident Theodore “Ted” R. Mushenski passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 102 on Sunday, June 22, 2025. As a beloved figure in his community, his remarkable life is marked by a deep commitment to family, faith, and service.
Ted was born on June 7, 1923, in Detroit to parents Peter and Helen (nee Ladach) Mushenski. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, who he cherished for over 61 years, as well as his brother Thomas and sister Theresa Manning. Ted is survived by his only daughter, Suzi Kole and her husband, Dr. Edward Sarrine. He also leaves behind grandchildren Nicole Sarrine and Eddie Sarrine (married to Alexandra) and two great-grandchildren, Trip and Charlie, along with numerous loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ted Mushenski graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1941, shortly before being drafted into the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. After returning home from the war, he married Virginia and relocated to Grosse Pointe Woods in 1955, where the home they built together has remained in the family for over 70 years.
After completing his military service, Ted pursued higher education while working. He attended night classes at the University of Detroit and earned a degree in accounting. He dedicated himself to a career at Ford Motor Company, where he worked in the accounting payroll division until his retirement in 1985.
Ted’s zest for life extended beyond work and family. He traveled extensively with his wife, exploring foreign countries and visiting family in Florida. His deep religious faith played a significant role in his life; he was one of the founding members of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, where he served on the church’s board and participated in the Star Seniors Group for two years.
Throughout his life, Ted was an active member of various organizations, including Delta Sigma Pi fraternity, Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Police, Elks, Grosse Pointe Men’s Club, Fairlane Club, Grosse Pointe Investment Club, and Disabled American Veterans. His community involvement and leadership were a testament to his commitment to civic engagement.
Those who knew him will remember Ted Mushenski for his sharp mind, talent for telling jokes, kind heart, deep faith, and unwavering dedication to family and friends. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched during his century-long journey.
A memorial Mass honoring Ted will be held at noon on Saturday, October 18, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, located at 467 Fairford in Grosse Pointe Woods. Following the service, Ted will be interred at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, organizations he supported as part of his commitment to helping those in need.
