Shakoor aims to empower women by sharing her experiences, including struggles with self-identity and personal loss, while advocating for greater awareness of women’s health issues.

Detroit – Satori Shakoor, a Detroit native and multifaceted artist, is making waves with her one-woman show, “Confessions of a Menopausal Femme Fatale.” The film, which captures Shakoor’s insightful and humorous take on her 12-year journey through menopause, began streaming on major platforms including Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, and Google Play starting June 12, 2023.

Shakoor filmed her performance over three nights in July 2023 at the Detroit Public Theater, where she created a space for empowerment and enlightenment about the often-taboo topic of menopause. The show embraces a mix of drama, comedy, and personal storytelling, making it a relatable experience for many women.

The film offers an intimate look into Shakoor’s life, reflecting on her various experiences with relationships and self-identity, including leaving her first husband and their child in 1985. Shakoor aims to foster discussion around menopause while tackling personal challenges such as addiction, postpartum depression, and the loss of loved ones, ultimately portraying menopause as a transformative journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment.

Background and Career

Satori Shakoor was born Jeanette McGruder and began her artistic career studying classical violin. Throughout her career, she collaborated with notable artists, including performing with Earl Klugh. Shakoor has been involved with the vocal quartet “Brides of Funkenstein” between 1978 and 1981, which was linked to the legendary group Parliament-Funkadelic led by George Clinton.

Shakoor received her education from Cass Technical High School and Michigan State University and has a wealth of experience in singing, acting, and public speaking. She currently hosts the program “Detroit Performs LIVE” for Detroit PBS and actively participates in storytelling events across the region. In 2017, she was awarded a Kresge Literary Arts Fellowship, a recognition that attests to her creative contributions.

Empowerment Through Storytelling

Shakoor’s inspiration to share her menopause experience arose during her mid-40s when she promised herself to document her journey for future generations facing similar challenges. Early in her menopause journey, she encountered her first symptoms roughly 25 years ago, a period she found unsettling and confusing, further fueled by a panic attack in 2022 that spurred her to revisit unresolved challenges in her life.

The show brings elements of humor intertwined with poignant personal anecdotes, touching on the complexities of life and the need for self-forgiveness. By openly discussing her struggles and victories, Shakoor encourages other women to engage in conversations about menopause, aiming to alter the stigma surrounding it.

Community Support and Awareness

Shakoor’s film has gained substantial support from a community of over 5,000 women who advocate for breaking menopause-related stigmas. She acknowledges the growing national trend toward increased awareness of women’s healthcare issues, a movement that has captured the attention of celebrities like Halle Berry, who have also started advocating for menopause awareness.

Shakoor reflects that the experience of sharing her story on stage and through film has allowed her to celebrate her successes and seek healing. As discussions about women’s health, particularly menopause, gain momentum, Shakoor’s work stands as a beacon of empowerment, showcasing how storytelling can facilitate understanding and connection among women experiencing similar life changes.
