As Detroit continues to revitalize its urban landscape, this project plays a pivotal role in improving city connectivity and public spaces.

Detroit – Construction on the Second Avenue Extension Project commenced this week in downtown Detroit, representing a significant urban development initiative with a budget of $103.9 million. This project aims to create a new roadway that will connect Second Avenue directly to the Detroit riverfront, enhancing accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

The new roadway will stretch from Congress Street to Steve Yzerman Drive, crossing over M-10. Currently, the distance from the end of Second Avenue to the riverfront is approximately a quarter mile. The extension is designed to accommodate not only motorists but also pedestrians and cyclists, reflecting a growing emphasis on multi-modal transportation options in urban planning.

The anticipated opening date for the new roadway is set for summer 2026. It is noted that nearly half of the right of way will be allocated for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, significantly enhancing walkability and promoting healthier modes of transportation in the area. Key features of the project will include street lighting and wide pathways to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for those commuting without vehicles.

The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRCFA) is in charge of funding and overseeing the development of the project. DRCFA CEO Bryan Crowe mentioned that the core focus of the project is to improve connectivity throughout the city while offering enhanced walkability options for residents and visitors. With direct access to the riverfront, the new roadway is expected to diminish the need for lengthy detours currently experienced by pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists traveling from downtown.

As part of the project’s launching ceremony, community leaders, city representatives, and private sector partners came together to sign a beam, marking a collective commitment to the city’s growth and revitalization. Key stakeholders in the development include Plante Moran Realpoint and the Sterling Group, both of which are involved in ongoing redevelopment efforts in the downtown Water Square area.

Presently surrounding the Second Avenue Extension project, additional redevelopment initiatives are underway. These include a new 25-floor, 600-room JW Marriott hotel, which is slated to open in 2027, directly connecting to the Huntington Place Convention Center. Additionally, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park is anticipated to open in the fall, further enhancing the riverfront’s appeal.

Moreover, the Residences at Water Square, a 25-story luxury apartment complex, has recently opened its doors in early 2024, further contributing to the ongoing development in the region. It should be noted that the Detroit People Mover will experience temporary closures from April 14 to April 17 due to construction activities related to the Second Avenue extension.

In connection with the ongoing development in the Water Square area, the People Mover station previously known as the West Riverfront Station has been renamed to Water Square Station, a change announced by city officials and private partners. This renaming reflects the evolving landscape and the new identity that the area is beginning to forge.

Updates to the People Mover station’s exterior are expected to be finalized by the end of 2026, adding to the improvements in the region. Additionally, starting this summer, the audio announcements on the People Mover will transition to be voiced by WJR Morning Show Co-Host Lloyd Jackson, providing a fresh auditory experience for riders navigating the city.

The Second Avenue Extension project is poised to foster a vibrant atmosphere for pedestrians and cyclists visiting the riverfront, contributing significantly to Detroit’s ongoing urban renewal efforts and the enhancement of public spaces in the city.
