DETROIT — The city of Detroit is mourning the loss of a significant figure in its history, as former police chief Stanley Knox has passed away at the age of 85. Knox’s journey embodies a rich story of service, dedication, and resilience. He departed from this world on February 14, leaving behind not just memories, but a legacy that will resonate for years to come.
Knox dedicated an impressive 28 years to the Detroit Police Department. Rising through the ranks, he became the city’s 31st police chief in February 1991, stepping into a challenging role following the tumultuous tenure of his predecessor, Chief William Hart, who was sadly dealt a severe blow due to corruption charges.
Under Knox’s leadership, the police department faced some of the most trying times in its history. Perhaps the most infamous episode was the tragic beating death of unarmed Black man Malice Green in November 1992, which drew widespread outrage and highlighted the community’s struggles with police relations. The officers involved were ultimately convicted of second-degree murder, a verdict that rocked the city and forced immediate scrutiny on police practices.
Knox’s tenure was anything but easy. The weight on his shoulders was immense, especially when it came to improving the tarnished image of the Detroit Police Department during this turbulent time. He served as chief until 1994, and although he faced fierce headwinds, his commitment to public service and dedication to the community never wavered.
Born in 1939 in Summerville, Georgia, to Roy and Doris Ludy Knox, Stanley’s early life laid the groundwork for his distinctive character. At just 17, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served honorably for three years before relocating to Detroit. It was here that he would lay down roots and forge a career that would forever change his city.
On his 21st birthday, Knox married Dorothy Brent, and their love story spanned an impressive 64 years. Dorothy herself was a powerhouse within the Detroit Police Department, breaking barriers and setting an example. Together, they navigated the trials of public service, standing strong beside each other through thick and thin.
Knox wasn’t just a police officer, he was a man of unwavering faith and commitment to his community. Active in the St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, he served in numerous roles, including contributions to the choir and the Technology Committee. His compassion and friendship touched many lives, and he was known to lend an empathetic ear to those in need.
Beyond his public service, Knox embraced life with gusto. He enjoyed motorcycling and traveled extensively across the United States and Canada with his wife, exploring breathtaking landscapes and visiting stunning national parks like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and The Redwoods. His passion for photography allowed him to capture the beauty they encountered during their travels, preserving those precious memories for the years to come.
Stanley Knox leaves behind a rich legacy that extends beyond the badge. Survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, as well as his brother Earl Hayes, several nephews and nieces, and countless friends, his impact will be felt throughout the community. A viewing is scheduled for Monday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, with a funeral service set for Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
