News Summary

The Youngstown State University women’s lacrosse team is set to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas. After a challenging loss against George Washington, YSU aims to regain momentum. Led by players like Katie Grottenthaler and Grace Rund, YSU hopes to improve their performance against Central Michigan, who recently ended a winning streak of their own. Both teams look to capitalize on their offensive strengths in this upcoming match.

Youngstown – The Youngstown State University (YSU) women’s lacrosse team is set to face off against the Central Michigan Chippewas on Sunday, April 12, 2025. The match will commence at 12 p.m. in Michigan. Fans of the team can follow the game through live statistics available at YSUSports.com, along with a free broadcast on Chippewas All Access.

YSU heads into this match following a difficult loss against George Washington, where they fell 15-11. This marks YSU’s fourth consecutive defeat, raising concerns about their current form as they strive to regain momentum. In their last game, Katie Grottenthaler led the offensive charge for YSU, scoring a team-high four goals. Grace Rund also showcased her talent with three goals, achieving a season-high performance. Additionally, Mary Gasper recorded her first collegiate goal in the match, while Lena Cox, Ava Kreutzer, and Ally Garrett each contributed one goal.

Brooke Peck had a standout game, achieving a career-high of three assists. On the draw control front, Grace Rund continued to impress, securing seven draw controls, though this was shy of her previous career-high of eight. On the defensive side, Tori Bustamante led the team with four caused turnovers. Mackenzie Flannigan also played a key role, notching three caused turnovers and a team-high three ground balls. In goal, Brooke Harper played for 51 minutes, saving four shots while allowing 14 goals, with Kara Goertz stepping in for the final nine minutes to make one save and concede one goal.

The game against George Washington started competitively, with George Washington scoring a goal just 42 seconds into the match. YSU quickly recovered, scoring five consecutive goals to take an early 5-1 lead. By the end of the first quarter, YSU held a 5-2 advantage. In the second quarter, both teams exchanged goals, leading to a halftime score of 6-5 in favor of YSU. However, the third quarter saw George Washington dominate the play, scoring the first five goals and establishing a commanding lead. Despite a late-game surge from YSU, scoring the last three goals of the contest, they could not overcome the deficit and finished with a 15-11 loss.

Central Michigan enters this upcoming game with an overall record of 3-9 and a Mid-American Conference (MAC) mark of 2-2. They recently saw their two-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Saint Francis. Central Michigan had faced a challenging non-conference schedule, including matches against ranked teams like No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 8 Michigan. In their last ten games, the Chippewas have improved significantly, achieving a record of 3-3 after a rough start in which they were 0-6.

In terms of scoring, Central Michigan ranks fourth in the MAC, with Skye DePrado leading the team and the conference with 22 goals and 24 points. The YSU vs. CMU matchup will mark the sixth all-time meeting, with Central Michigan holding the advantage in the series at 4-1. In their last encounter during the 2024 season, the Chippewas defeated YSU 17-11, a result YSU will be eager to change this time around.

YSU was placed in a tied for sixth position in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll, a reflection of the team’s mixed expectations this season. The team currently boasts a roster of 30 players, with 17 newcomers and only 13 returnees from the previous year. Notably, Molly Sheridan has set a new program record for career games played, appearing in 60 matches, while Katie Grottenthaler holds the record for most single-season free-position goals at YSU with 19 goals.

YSU is performing well in various offensive and defensive metrics within the MAC, leading the conference in total goals scored with 160. Following this match against Central Michigan, YSU will return home to face Detroit Mercy on Senior Day at Farmers National Bank Field on April 19, 2025.
