DETROIT, Mich. — A 29-year-old woman and her 7-year-old daughter were shot Monday evening on Detroit east side after a man forced his way into their apartment, the Detroit Police Department said.

The shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. on Oct. 12 in the 8000 block of Farnsworth near M-53 and Gratiot.

Police said the incident stemmed from an altercation over a group of children fighting earlier that day. The father of one of the children went to the apartment of a woman and her daughter and began to argue. After the woman shut the door, the man forced his way into the home, pulled out a gun and fired one shot.

The woman was shot in the arm, and the bullet went through the mother and then hit the child in the shoulder. Both the mom and daughter are in stable condition according to police, and are expected to survive.

The suspect then drove off in a White GMC Terrain. Officials say the suspect is known in the area and are encouraging him to turn himself in.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department or call 911.
