About Us

About HEREDetroit

HEREDetroit is a hyperlocal digital news publication serving the people of Detroit, Michigan and the surrounding communities. We cover what matters most to residents—breaking news, public safety, local government, business openings and closings, community events, schools, sports, and the everyday stories that shape life in Detroit.

Our mission is simple: deliver timely, accurate, fact-checked local news that keeps you informed about your city. Every story we publish goes through editorial review before it reaches you.

Our promise: We would rather not publish a story than publish one that gets the facts wrong. Accuracy comes first—always.

Part of the HERE City Network

HEREDetroit is part of the HERE City Network, a growing family of 100+ hyperlocal news sites covering communities across more than 30 states and Washington, D.C. Each HERE site operates with its own local editorial focus while sharing the same editorial standards, fact-checking infrastructure, and commitment to accuracy that define the network.

The HERE City Network is operated by HERE City (herecity.com), a digital media company headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina. HERE City has been publishing hyperlocal news since 2018, with HEREColumbia.com, HERELexington, and HEREChapin among its earliest sites. Today the network spans 100+ communities across 30+ states, making it the largest hyperlocal digital news network in America.

Corrections Policy

We take errors seriously. If we publish something that is factually incorrect, we want to know about it and we will fix it.

How to report an error: Contact us at the email address below with the article URL, a description of the error, and any supporting information or sources. We review every correction request.

How we handle corrections: Confirmed errors are corrected directly in the article with a visible correction notice appended to the story indicating what was changed, when it was changed, and why. We do not silently edit published articles. If a story is found to be fundamentally unreliable, we will retract it entirely and replace the content with a retraction notice.

Our standard: We aim to acknowledge correction requests within 24 hours and to publish corrections as quickly as the verification process allows.

Commercial Relationships & Paid Content

HEREDetroit is an independent local news organization. We also operate a small number of paid editorial products that allow business leaders and organizations to be covered by our newsroom in ways that go beyond breaking news. We believe strongly that every article we publish should be clearly labeled with the relationship between HEREDetroit and the subject, so readers understand exactly how a piece was produced.

Every article on HEREDetroit falls into one of four disclosure tiers. The tier is visible on the article itself, and it controls what the subject could and could not do in the editorial process.

Important: The tier an article falls under does not change the editorial pipeline it passes through. Every article published on HEREDetroit — independent reporting, disclosed business coverage, Interview Studio profiles, and reviewed sponsored content alike — goes through the same newsroom review. The disclosure tier describes the commercial relationship with the subject. It does not describe a different standard of accuracy, sourcing, or review. An Interview Studio article is reviewed the same way an independent news story is reviewed; the difference is only that the reader is told up front that the subject commissioned the profile.

Tier 1 — Independent Editorial

These are articles where HEREDetroit’s newsroom initiated the story. The subject has no business relationship, financial relationship, or paid placement with HEREDetroit or the HERE City Network. There is no disclosure box because there is nothing to disclose — the work is straightforward local journalism.

What you see: No disclosure box. Standard byline and date.

What the subject can change: Nothing. Subjects may respond to questions and may request corrections of factual errors after publication, but have no review rights over the draft.

Tier 2 — Business Relationship Disclosed

These are articles where the subject has a business relationship with HEREDetroit or the HERE City Network that readers deserve to know about — for example, an article about a technology partner, vendor, or affiliated company. The story is reported and written by a HEREDetroit journalist the same way as Tier 1 coverage. The business relationship is fully disclosed at the top of the article.

What you see: A visible “Editor’s Disclosure” box at the top of the article naming the relationship.

What the subject can change: Subjects may review the draft for factual accuracy regarding their own operations only. They cannot edit the journalist’s interpretation, analysis, or framing. Final editorial control and the decision to publish remain with HEREDetroit.

Tier 3 — Interview Studio (Paid Editorial)

Interview Studio is a paid editorial service offered by the HERE City Network. A business leader or organization commissions a professionally reported profile; a HEREDetroit journalist then conducts an interview, writes the article, and edits it to the same standards as unpaid editorial coverage. The subject reviews the draft for factual accuracy only.

Pricing (as of April 2026): $199 for publication on a single HERE City site; $499 for publication across all HERE City sites in one state; $999 for publication across the HERE City Network.

What you see: A visible “Interview Studio Disclosure” box at the top of the article, stating that the piece was produced through Interview Studio and naming the pricing tier structure.

What the subject can change: Factual accuracy only. Subjects cannot change the journalist’s questions, interpretation, conclusions, or framing. HEREDetroit retains the right to publish, not publish, or stop publication at any time. Subjects are required to sign a Subject Sign-Off and Release confirming factual accuracy and indemnifying HEREDetroit against third-party claims arising from their statements.

Why we disclose this: Many community newspapers produce similar feature profiles for businesses that advertise with them and do not disclose the commercial relationship. We disclose it every time. We believe that disclosure protects readers and reflects the kind of transparency we want the HERE City Network to be known for.

Tier 4 — Advertiser-Produced Content

In rare cases, an advertiser may produce their own content for publication on HEREDetroit. These pieces are clearly labeled as “Sponsored Content” and use distinct schema markup (schema.org AdvertiserContentArticle). HEREDetroit reviews all Tier 4 content for factual accuracy, legality, and compliance with our standards, but the copy is the advertiser’s own. Tier 4 content does not carry a HEREDetroit byline.

What you see: A prominent “Sponsored Content” label. No staff byline. Distinct visual treatment from editorial coverage.

What the subject can change: The advertiser writes the content. HEREDetroit reviews it and may reject it.

Schema.org and AI Transparency

Each tier uses specific structured data so search engines and AI systems can correctly categorize the article:

We choose to emit accurate structured data even when the law does not require it, because we believe AI citation systems should be able to tell our independent journalism apart from our commercial products, and vice versa. Misrepresenting the category to an AI system would undermine the value of appearing in one.

How to Tell Which Tier an Article Is

If you are reading an article on HEREDetroit and want to know how it was produced, look at the top of the article:

Every disclosure box links back to this section so you can confirm exactly what that tier means.

Corrections and Concerns

If you believe an article on HEREDetroit contains a factual error, regardless of which tier it belongs to, please use our corrections process described in the section above or email [email protected]. We hold every tier — including Tier 4 — to the same accuracy standard.

Privacy and Ethical Standards

We are especially careful with stories involving crime, medical events, private individuals, and minors. We follow these principles in all reporting:

We do not name minors involved in criminal cases or sensitive situations unless their names appear in official public records and naming them serves a clear public interest.

We do not publish unverified mugshots, personal photographs, or private information obtained outside of public records.

We do not sensationalize crime, medical emergencies, or personal tragedies for engagement purposes.

We respect the distinction between public interest and public curiosity. Not everything that attracts attention deserves publication.
