DETROIT, Mich. — Supporters of a statue honoring Coleman A. Young got their first look at what it will be on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when sculptor Austen Brantley’s design was shown to the public inside Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum.

The evening launched a fundraising push for the project. Brantley’s model of the late city leader stands 26 inches tall and is a small-scale version of a bronze figure planned for the U.S. Capitol. A matching statue is planned for Detroit as well.

Young, the first Black person elected to run Detroit, led the city from 1974 until 1994. His son, Coleman A. Young II, now the president pro tem of the Detroit City Council, welcomed guests at the museum, and Wright Museum President and CEO Neil A. Barclay spoke during the program.
