Detroit, Mich. — Shoppers filled Detroit People’s Food Co-op on Saturday, Oct. 10, after a community call for support following recent financial setbacks at the North End grocery.
The community-owned store opened in 2024 and features products from local vendors and freshly prepared foods, with thousands of member-owners helping guide its future.
General Manager Aaron Orr said summer equipment failures, power outages and extreme weather cost the new business roughly two weeks of sales, including a cooler wall failure that wiped out tens of thousands of dollars in product.
A social media push urged metro Detroiters to shop the Black-led co-op. Organizers said the response showed neighbors taking care of each other, and the store asked residents to keep the momentum going as member-owners and regular customers.
The co-op sits on Woodward Avenue in the North End as a community-owned grocery focused on fresh, local food. Anyone can shop without a membership, while membership offers ownership votes for adults who join.
