DETROIT, Mich. — With no captain this season, the Detroit Red Wings are spreading leadership across a group of veterans that meets every week to 10 days, depending on the schedule.
The latest meeting, held before practice Monday, included Ben Chiarot, Alex DeBrincat, Justin Faulk, Keegan Kolesar and Moritz Seider. Lucas Raymond missed it while taking a maintenance day.
Former captain Dylan Larkin was not part of the group. Larkin requested a trade in the offseason and was stripped of the captaincy before training camp. He is in the fourth season of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an annual cap hit of $8.7 million, and he holds a full no-trade clause.
Coach Todd McLellan said the staff wants every player to take a piece of the leadership role, adding that it does not have to rest on one person. Seider and Raymond serve as the team’s two alternate captains.
The offseason also saw general manager Steve Yzerman move into a senior adviser role, with assistant GM Shawn Horcoff named interim GM. DeBrincat, a Detroit-area native, has set up off-ice outings, and the players have gone golfing and watched the Lions together at Cosm Detroit downtown.
