DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions are expected to change centers this week, with Cade Mays stepping into the starting job when Green Bay comes to Ford Field on Sunday, coach Dan Campbell indicated Wednesday.
Mays joined Detroit in the offseason on a three-year, $25 million contract, then fractured his wrist during training camp. Juice Scruggs handled the position for the first five games while Mays recovered.
Campbell said the team gave Mays a heavy workload in Tuesday practice, liked how he looked and wants to get him on the field right away rather than ease him in.
The coach ruled out splitting snaps between the two, saying a center touches the ball on every play and that the timing, calls and the quarterback’s comfort depend on one player staying in the spot.
Quarterback Jared Goff took snaps from Mays, a former Carolina Panthers center, from April until his injury about six weeks ago. Scruggs is expected to serve as the backup center and push for time at left guard.
