DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Red Wings have committed to Alex DeBrincat for the long haul, signing the 28-year-old forward to a seven-year contract extension that carries an average value of $13 million a season.
The deal keeps a hometown player in place. DeBrincat grew up in Farmington Hills and came up through the Victory Honda AAA program before Chicago drafted him with the 39th pick in 2016, a second-round choice. Detroit traded for him from Ottawa in 2023, and he made the All-Star Game in his first season with the club.
He is coming off his best year. Playing all 82 games in 2025-26, DeBrincat led the team with 41 goals and 85 points and topped it with 15 power-play goals. That made him the first Detroit player since Marian Hossa in 2009 to reach 40 goals, and the first American-born skater in team history with 80 points.
He has kept scoring this fall, with a team-best four goals and eight points through six games, though Detroit has dropped five of those six. Over his career he has 298 goals and 603 points in 702 regular-season games.
The signing lands during a rocky stretch for the franchise. Shawn Horcoff is serving as interim general manager after Steve Yzerman was moved into an advisory role in July, and Dylan Larkin lost the captaincy after asking for a trade.
