DETROIT, Mich. — Filling up in Metro Detroit costs a lot more than it did a week ago. AAA put the area’s average for regular unleaded at $4.8188 a gallon on Tuesday, up from $4.5095 seven days earlier.
The Tuesday number is a small break from Monday, when the Metro Detroit average sat at $4.8677, the priciest of any Michigan market tracked by AAA. Ann Arbor and Flint followed at $4.81 each, while Marquette was cheapest in the state at $4.65.
GasBuddy, the Dallas-based price tracker, measured the Detroit average at about $4.84 on Monday, a climb of 35.5 cents over the week.
Statewide, AAA’s Michigan average for regular is $4.7686 today. A year ago it was $3.0678. AAA spokeswoman Adrienne Woodland pointed to higher demand, tighter supplies and crude oil trading back above $100 a barrel as the drivers behind the run-up.
Diesel is even steeper. Metro Detroit’s diesel average stands at $6.8052, and AAA logged a record Detroit-area diesel high of $6.9078 this month.
