DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Red Wings suspended center Dylan Larkin without pay on Thursday, Oct. 29, after the longtime Detroit forward told the club he would no longer play for it while he waits to be traded.

The team learned of the decision Wednesday night. Larkin had asked for a trade during the offseason and had kept playing while the front office looked for a deal, but he decided this week, after meeting in Detroit with his agent, Pat Brisson, that it was time to step away. Coach Todd McLellan said Thursday morning that Larkin would not dress against Chicago that night.

In a team statement, Shawn Horcoff said the Red Wings were disappointed, cited Larkin’s obligations to the club and his teammates, and said Detroit will keep exploring trades. Any deal needs Larkin’s approval because of his no-trade clause, and the team said it must also serve its long-term goals. The suspension costs Larkin $41,237.11 for each day it lasts.

His deal runs eight years at $69.6 million total, and he is only in year three of it. The club removed his captaincy on Sept. 11, a title he had held since 2021. He opened this season hurt, returned Oct. 6 and has two goals and four assists in 10 games.

Detroit drafted him in the first round in 2014, and he has never played for another NHL team, with 278 goals and 649 points in 818 regular-season games. Only nine players in club history have scored more goals or points.
