DETROIT, Mich. — The unusually warm stretch in Detroit is easing off for the Halloween weekend, but temperatures will stay above where they normally sit at the end of October.
Thursday brought highs in the lower to mid 70s across southeast Michigan, 10 to 15 degrees above normal, according to the National Weather Service. A cold front crossing the state that afternoon set off scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder.
Behind that front, Friday turns mostly sunny and a bit cooler, with highs in the low 60s and light north-northwest winds. Saturday looks mostly cloudy with highs again in the low 60s, and the weather service has Detroit at 62 both days before a high of 64 on Sunday.
Even the cooler days beat the calendar. The typical high for this point in the season is about 56 degrees.
The month as a whole has run hot. Steven Freitag, a meteorologist at the weather service office in White Lake Township, said the city is running roughly 5.1 degrees above its usual October readings, enough to put this month among the 10 warmest Octobers on record for the city.
Freitag said big swings are common in fall as the jet stream shifts, and he pointed to the strong El Nino pattern in the Pacific as another factor pushing temperatures higher in Michigan this year.
