El-Sayed, Stevens Plan Sunday Church Stop in Detroit With Clyburn

DETROIT, Mich. — Michigan Democrats are counting on a Sunday church visit in Detroit to patch up the party two days before Tuesday’s election, as U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is set to appear with Rep. Haley Stevens, the rival he narrowly beat in the August primary.

South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn, a leading Black voice in the party who backed Stevens in the primary, is expected to join them. El-Sayed’s campaign also announced a separate Souls to the Polls stop with Clyburn on Sunday afternoon. The church appearance is not expected to be widely open to the public or press.

It would be the pair’s first time together since a unity breakfast on Aug. 6. Stevens drew strong backing from Black and Jewish voters, and roughly $60 million in ads attacked El-Sayed during the primary, about half of it from AIPAC.

On Friday, Stevens tied the event to El-Sayed condemning a Rebellion PAC ad that blamed rising grocery costs on American aid to Israel, and said she expected an apology for past remarks. El-Sayed responded that Stevens was rehashing a primary that ended three months ago and urged Democrats to focus on beating Republican Mike Rogers. Early voting in Michigan began Oct. 24.
