VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Van Buren Township planners gave a 5-1 green light Wednesday to the site layout for a Google computing campus on 282 acres beside I-94 and I-275, just west of Detroit Metro Airport.
The hyperscale build, nicknamed Project Cannoli, covers nearly 1.5 million square feet. Approval lets developer Panattoni keep laying utilities and grading even as residents keep raising alarms about hum, water demand, the environment and nearby home prices.
Project papers put water use in a range from about two million to 3.6 million gallons a day and electric need near a full gigawatt. Panattoni pegs staffing between 50 and 200 workers once the halls are running.
The Michigan Public Service Commission recently gave conditional OK to a two-decade Google-DTE Energy supply contract that pushes big grid upgrades onto the company and tries to keep costs off other ratepayers. Wayne County commissioners also overturned an executive veto so that roughly $125 million in local tax breaks can proceed.
Utility trenches are already opening in stages, with short closures along the I-94 service drive and later work on Haggerty Road into 2027. DTE schedules point to first power draw as soon as December 2027.
