DETROIT, Mich. — Detroit locked up forward Alex DeBrincat on a seven-year extension at $13 million a season, a $91 million pledge announced midweek.
The Farmington Hills skater owns 298 NHL goals and 603 points. A year ago he led the Wings with 85 points and tied his personal best with 41 goals, ending a stretch without a 40-goal Detroit scorer that dated to Marian Hossa in 2009.
He already paces the roster with four goals and eight points even while the club has dropped five of six. After the new deal landed he piled up a two-goal, one-assist night in a 5-4 overtime setback against New Jersey.
Coach Todd McLellan singled out DeBrincat’s line with Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Emmitt Finnie as the clearest top trio in that game.
Chicago picked him in 2016; Toronto and Ottawa stops came before Detroit traded for him from the Senators in 2023. He made the All-Star cut in his first Wings year and earlier with the Blackhawks.
