DETROIT, Mich. — Detroit voters can start casting ballots in person Saturday, the opening day of nine days of early voting ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.
The city has eight early voting locations, with hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Sunday, Nov. 1. A bonus day, Monday, Nov. 2, has shorter hours, 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., and only two offices take part: the clerk inside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center and the Elections Commission, 2978 W. Grand Blvd.
Opening day comes with a celebration. City election officials planned an all-day block party, billed as Get Out to Vote, at the Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers Road. Families can expect giveaways, pumpkin decorating, face painting and a petting zoo, and a Scarefest party takes over after 5 p.m.
Michigan voters added early in-person voting to the state constitution through a 2022 amendment.
City Clerk Janice Winfrey asked absentee voters to send their ballots back by Friday, Oct. 30, so they have time to check that each one arrived. The legal deadline is later: 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. Polling places open at 7 a.m. on Election Day and close at 8 p.m.
