DETROIT, Mich. — Roughly 100 shoppers stood outside the downtown Detroit Apple Store, on Woodward Avenue, on Friday morning as the iPhone Duo, the first iPhone that folds, went on sale.
Some had settled in the evening before. Early arrivals showed up Thursday afternoon and stayed through the night with chairs, blankets and sleeping bags, and store staff clapped and cheered the crowd inside once the store unlocked at 8 a.m.
The Duo pairs a 7.6-inch screen inside with a 5.4-inch screen on the outside and runs on the A20 Pro chip. Prices start at $1,999, and a 2TB version costs $3,199.
Pre-orders opened Oct. 16, and the phone quickly went on backorder. Apple had said only a very limited supply would be set aside for walk-in buyers on launch day.
Downtown was not the only busy spot in the area. The longest local line formed at the Apple Store in the Somerset Collection in Troy.
