Detroit Lions Rookie LB Jimmy Rolder Out for the Season

DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Lions lost rookie linebacker Jimmy Rolder for the rest of the season, head coach Dan Campbell said Monday, a day after Rolder hurt his hamstring in the win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Campbell called it a significant injury and said Rolder may need surgery. The rookie heads to injured reserve.

The timing stings. Rolder had been earning a bigger role on defense and was turning in his best game Sunday, making five stops, two of them behind the line, and getting the first sack of his NFL career before he left.

His injury came on the same play that sent fellow linebacker Jack Campbell to the hospital, which kept Rolder’s loss mostly out of the spotlight at first.

Detroit took Rolder out of Michigan in the fourth round, and he also stood out on special teams. A leg problem slowed him through training camp and into the start of the year, so his rookie line ends at 11 tackles and one sack across five games, with three of those stops behind the line.

Other Lions who got hurt Sunday will be looked at day to day before the next game, Campbell said.
