REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A driver is dead after a car moving at high speed plowed into the back of a slow pickup on eastbound Interstate 96 in Redford Township, Michigan, on Tuesday afternoon and then burst into flames.
Redford Township police were sent to the crash at 2:47 p.m. on Nov. 3. It happened on the eastbound side between the Beech Daly and Telegraph interchanges, where traffic had stacked up on the exit ramp and the pickup was creeping along in the exit lane.
Investigators said the Ford Focus was closing on the Telegraph exit fast. It hit the truck from behind and sent it spinning into a sport utility vehicle. The Focus then caught fire. Rescuers pulled its driver out, but the driver died later at a hospital.
People in the pickup and the SUV had minor injuries and were treated at a hospital. Police said speed was a factor, and whether drugs or alcohol played a role is still under investigation.
State troopers and road crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation helped at the scene, and the eastbound lanes stayed closed for almost four hours. Township police want witnesses, or anyone with useful details, to reach the Redford Township Traffic Bureau.
