The Country Club of Detroit
Guest invite at Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Farms. H.S. Colt routing from 1914 with subsequent work by Tom Doak. One of the cleanest restorations in the country — every green complex feels Colt-correct. Members keep it pure. Top private in the metro.
Memorable Hole: #15 — Colt par-3 over the chasm
Toughest Green: #17 — long sloped runoff
Best Food: Grill Room walleye after the round
Rouge Park Golf Course
Walked Rouge Park on a Friday afternoon — Detroit municipal course operated by Vargo on the city's west side along the Rouge River. The routing rolls with the river corridor, walkable at every age, $40 weekday walking rate. Honest, no-frills Detroit golf for everyone.
Memorable Hole: #4 — riverside par-3 over the Rouge
Toughest Green: #11 — back-tier hidden pin
Best Food: Clubhouse coney dog at the turn
Plum Hollow Country Club
Guest round at Plum Hollow in Southfield. Wayne Stiles design from 1921, hosted the 1947 PGA Championship. Mature trees, traditional Detroit-area parkland, member-friendly conditioning. One of the great pre-war Detroit privates — Stiles routing holds up at every bend.
Memorable Hole: #3 — the dogleg par-5 that Hogan reportedly loved
Toughest Green: #15 — small green guarded short-right by a deep bunker
Best Food: Member lunch — Reuben sandwich and a Stroh's
Rackham Golf Course
Played Rackham on a Sunday morning in May. Donald Ross-designed Detroit municipal course just south of 8 Mile, owned by the city of Detroit and operated by Vargo Golf. The conditioning is real — Ross routing is intact, greens roll fair, and you can get on for under $50 walking. Best muni value in the metro.
Memorable Hole: #7 — short par-4 with a Ross-classic green complex
Toughest Green: #13 — sloped back-to-front, tough recovery if you miss long
Best Food: Halfway-house Detroit-style pizza slice
Oakland Hills Country Club — South Course
Got the guest invite for the South Course after the Gil Hanse restoration. The bunkering is the most aggressive championship-look in Michigan now — every fairway makes you commit to a side. The South is back in tournament shape for the 2024 US Women's Open and the 2034 US Open. Best resto job in American golf.
Memorable Hole: #16 — the Hanse-restored green complex tied to Hogan's 1951 win
Toughest Green: #10 — newly restored false front, no easy putt
Best Food: Hogan Room shrimp cocktail after the round
Detroit Golf Club
Played the Donald Ross North Course on a perfect October morning. The fairways were rolling firm and the greens read exactly like every Ross design should. Detroit GC is the cleanest classic-Ross routing in the city — hosting the Rocket Mortgage Classic on this layout makes complete sense.
Memorable Hole: North #6 — a long Ross par-4 that demanded a smart fairway approach
Toughest Green: North #18 — false-front green that punished anything short
Best Food: Members' grill perch dinner after the round
