Palmer Woods presents perhaps the most complete vision of Detroit's early-20th-century residential ambition: a planned estate neighborhood where curvilinear streets, deep setbacks, and English Country architectural vocabulary create an enclave that feels removed from the urban grid around it. Homes range from 4,000 to more than 12,000 square feet and were built between 1915 and 1930, many designed by prominent Detroit architects. The Palmer Woods Association maintains strict standards and organizes one of Detroit's most celebrated annual home tours. The neighborhood is diverse economically and racially by Detroit standards for a premium neighborhood, drawing attorneys, executives, physicians, and community leaders who want the most distinguished in-city address available.
History
Palmer Woods was developed by James Burgess Book Sr. beginning in 1915 on land adjacent to the Palmer Park estate donated to Detroit by U.S. Senator Thomas W. Palmer in 1893. Book designed the neighborhood as a self-contained estate enclave with entrance gatehouses, deed restrictions, and curvilinear streets inspired by English Garden City planning principles. The neighborhood reached its peak prestige in the 1920s-1930s, attracting top Detroit business and professional figures. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Like Boston-Edison and Indian Village, Palmer Woods experienced disinvestment in the late 20th century but has rebounded significantly in the 21st-century Detroit revival.
