City Council County Council MI Senate MI House US Congress Elections Civic Issues

Wayne County sits inside one of the most layered governmental structures in the region. Residents answer to at least five levels of elected authority simultaneously: the federal government, statewide offices, Wayne County Council, Detroit City Council, and school district boards — each a separately elected body covering its own geographic slice of the county. Michigan Supreme Court (7 justices)

Wayne’s federal delegation includes US Rep. Shri Thanedar (MI District 13) and US Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI District 12) and Senators Gary C. Peters and Elissa Slotkin.

Wayne County Council controls property tax millage, land-use zoning outside city limits, and fee-in-lieu-of-tax agreements. Downtown zoning decisions and the Detroit Police Department budget run through Detroit City Council. State funding for schools, roads, and Medicaid flows from the Michigan Legislature, which convenes 103rd Legislature (2025-2026); convenes second Wednesday of January annually. The Wayne County Elections and Voter Registration Office administers local balloting under Michigan Bureau of Elections oversight.

HEREDetroit covers Wayne County Council meetings, Detroit City Council sessions, Michigan Legislature session, federal delegation votes and town halls, school board meetings, and candidate filing windows. We also pull FOIA-sourced travel records and contracts at both the city and county level. If it shapes how Wayne County is governed, it’s HERE.

Data Center Detroit

DATA CENTER: NEWS, INFORMATION & RESOURCE CENTER FOR DETROIT

Wayne County now holds Michigan's largest approved data-center campus, and the decisions that got it there ran through a township planning commission, the county commission, and the state utility regulator.

A data center in or near Detroit would first need local land-use approval through City of Detroit, and Wayne County Commission and County Executive weighs in on land outside city limits and on tax incentives. The Michigan Public Service Commission is the state utility regulator; it reviews rates and large-customer power contracts for the utilities it oversees. Air and water permits come from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

National context: Federal energy researchers estimate data centers used about 4.4% of all U.S. electricity in 2023 and could use 6.7% to 12% by 2028, which is why utility commissions, local boards, and voters are now central to where these campuses land. U.S. Department of Energy report

What’s on file near Detroit

  • Van Buren Charter Township, Wayne CountyGoogle's Project Cannoli, a 1-gigawatt data center campus on roughly 280 acres north of I-94 near Haggerty Road, received preliminary site plan approval from the township Planning Commission in February 2026 and final site plan approval in October. The township approved $125 million in tax incentives in May. On Oct. 1, 2026, the Wayne County Commission voted 13-0 to override County Executive Warren Evans's veto of the county tax incentive, and the Michigan Public Service Commission approved the DTE power contract with conditions meant to keep costs off other customers. Township officials say the campus could use 2 million to 3.6 million gallons of water a day at full operation.
  • Lyon Charter Township, Oakland County, next door to NoviProject Flex, a proposed 1.8 million-square-foot, six-building data center on 172 industrially zoned acres near Milford Road south of Grand River Avenue, won conditional Planning Commission approval in September 2025. As neighbors organized, the township adopted a six-month moratorium on new data-center applications in March 2026 that does not cover Project Flex, and residents filed recall petitions against the Board of Trustees. The developer has offered about $10 million in township-administered community funds and filed a sixth site plan in October 2026, with Planning Commission review expected Nov. 9.
  • Augusta Charter Township, Washtenaw CountyOn Aug. 4, 2026, voters overturned Ordinance 2025-02, which had rezoned seven parcels totaling 522.2 acres from Agricultural Residential to General Industrial for a proposed hyperscale data center campus tied to Thor Equities. The result was 2,314 No (89.59%) to 269 Yes (10.41%), so the land stays agricultural residential. The Township Board had approved the rezoning 7-0 on July 22, 2025, and residents petitioned it onto the ballot. On Sept. 22, 2026, the board adopted Ordinance 2026-04, which lets the township impose temporary zoning moratoriums of six months to one year. A separate recall effort against all seven township officials cleared county petition review on Sept. 24; the earliest possible recall election would be May 2027.
  • Ohio spillover watchOn Nov. 3, 2026, Ohio voters in 18 municipalities decided 21 local data-center measures, more than half of the 41 on ballots nationwide, and every Ohio result went against new data-center development, from outright bans to voter-approval and financial-guarantee rules. With that many Ohio doors closing at once, developers hunting for power, land, and water are expected to look harder at southeast Michigan and the I-94 and I-96 corridors, which is why the decisions below matter here.
