Montreal, Quebec — Canadiens fans repeatedly chanted for Dylan Larkin during Detroit’s 1-0 shootout loss at Bell Centre on Saturday, and the Red Wings forward said afterward the moment took him by surprise.
Larkin said he never would have imagined that reaction in Montreal and called the Bell Centre the best atmosphere in hockey, saying the fans are passionate and knowledgeable before he refocused on the game.
The former captain requested a trade out of Detroit in the offseason and has not joined a Canadian team. He missed training camp, the preseason and the first two games before returning Oct. 6 with a goal and an assist against Ottawa.
Detroit fell to 1-3-1 after the shootout defeat, its second loss in two nights. Daniil Tarasov stopped 30 shots in regulation and overtime before Montreal won in the sixth round of the shootout.
The Red Wings host the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday at home.
