A motorist who stopped to help after a crash was struck and killed late Saturday on the southbound Lodge Freeway near Nine Mile Road in Southfield, north of Detroit, Michigan.
Michigan State Police said the first crash, shortly after 11:30 p.m., left a vehicle disabled and blocking the two left lanes. A passing driver stopped on the right shoulder, got out, and crossed the freeway to try to help the people in that crash.
While that person was assisting, another vehicle swerved to avoid the disabled car and hit the pedestrian, police said. Troopers, Southfield police, and Southfield Fire medics started CPR. The motorist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the driver who hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene and cooperated. They said there was no immediate sign that alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The freeway was closed for the investigation and reopened at about 4:30 a.m. The case remains under investigation.
