Parents of a 3-year-old who brought a loaded, holstered handgun to a Canton daycare were arraigned after the child removed the weapon from a backpack in class.
Brandon John Ely, 28, a Detroit police officer, was charged with fourth-degree child abuse, a one-year misdemeanor. Rabab Ibrahim Al Zayad, 27, was charged with unsafe storage of a firearm, a 93-day misdemeanor.
Prosecutors and police said the incident happened at Children’s World Early Learning Center on Sheldon Road. A teacher intervened after the child passed the gun to other students. No injuries were reported.
Detroit police said Ely was placed on administrative duty with no-gun status while the department reviews the matter. A judge ordered both parents to surrender firearms while the case is pending. The next court date is Oct. 30, 2026.
Canton police urged gun owners to use safe storage and noted free gun-lock resources are available through the department.
