Montreal, Quebec — The Detroit Red Wings fell 1-0 in a shootout to the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Saturday as Zachary Bolduc scored in the sixth round.
Jacob Fowler stopped 30 shots for his second NHL shutout, and Daniil Tarasov also made 30 saves in his first start for Detroit, which left town at 1-3-1 after a back-to-back.
Bolduc beat Tarasov five-hole for the only shootout goal, and Fowler denied Nate Danielson to end a sixth straight Detroit attempt after regulation and overtime stayed scoreless.
Red Wings coach Todd McLellan called it a gutsy effort on the second night of a back-to-back after a 6-3 loss to Seattle on Friday, saying the team had to weather an early storm before playing even.
Montreal had three apparent goals waved off, including an overtime marker from Alexandre Texier for offside, while Detroit’s Andrew Copp was turned aside on a third-period breakaway.
The Canadiens improved to 2-2-1 and snapped a three-game skid in front of a loud Bell Centre crowd that also chanted for Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin during the road game in Montreal.
