Two Men Charged Over Detroit Metro Airport Terminal Crashes

ROMULUS, Mich. — Two drivers accused of steering into terminals at Detroit Metro Airport in Romulus months apart now face attempted murder counts, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy told reporters there was no sign that either crash was an act of terrorism. The cases are unrelated.

Prosecutors say the first defendant, a 37-year-old Clinton Township man named Brian Sutton, drove a Mercedes through glass doors at the McNamara Terminal on Jan. 23 and into the Delta Air Lines counter. Two Delta workers and a TSA agent were hit by glass and debris, but no one suffered serious injuries. The charges against Sutton include three counts of attempted murder, three of felonious assault and three of assault intended to cause great bodily harm, plus malicious destruction of a building.

The second defendant, David Chamlee, 67, of Southgate, is accused of jumping a curb and driving into the Evans Terminal on May 29. A woman hurt her leg getting out of the way. He faces two counts each of the same three assault charges plus the property charge.

Both men were arraigned Monday in 34th District Court in Romulus, where bond was set at $100,000 for each. Heavy concrete barriers went up outside the terminals after the January crash, and Worthy said both cases could have ended in mass casualties had the terminals been crowded.
