DETROIT, Mich. — An 18-year-old from Oak Park is being held without bond on a first-degree premeditated murder charge in the Oct. 13 shooting on Detroit’s east side. Kalyah Embery, 16, died, and a man, 19, was wounded.

Jarek Sneed was charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, and a judge refused to set bond when he was arraigned Saturday, Oct. 17. Detroit Police Department homicide investigators made the arrest on Oct. 14, the day after the shooting, by working through tips and leads.

Investigators say Embery, the man and two other people were inside a Jeep in the 4700 block of Chalmers Street at about 6:49 p.m. when gunfire came from a passing sedan. Embery was struck more than once. The man’s wounds were not life-threatening. Neither of the other two passengers was hurt.

Along with the murder count, Sneed is accused of assault with intent to murder on four counts, a count each of firing from a vehicle causing death and causing injury, and seven felony firearm counts. Court records list a probable cause conference for Oct. 26 and an examination on Nov. 2.

Embery had already lost both parents in recent years, and a car crash earlier in 2026 took the life of her older sister.
