DETROIT, Mich. — Kevin Adell, the metro Detroit owner of The Word Network and other broadcast properties, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection little more than a week after a federal jury in Detroit ordered him to pay $62.2 million in a race discrimination case.
The voluntary petition, case 2:26-bk-02722, was filed Oct. 23 in federal bankruptcy court in the Middle District of Florida. A Chapter 11 case puts an automatic stay on collection efforts while the debtor works on a reorganization plan. The filing lists Adell’s 20 largest creditors, owed a combined total of more than $101.8 million.
Among them is Bishop George Bloomer, a North Carolina pastor who hosted a program on The Word Network. Jurors sided with Bloomer this month on his claims that Adell harassed him and retaliated against him after Bloomer objected to a racially offensive meme Adell sent him by text. Bloomer was dropped from the network in 2019 and sued in 2022.
Adell has also been fighting the IRS over taxes, adding to the financial pressure that preceded the bankruptcy.
