SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — A 21-year-old Southfield man, Breylon Roberts, has pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of Trey Roberts, 23, his older brother, at the home the two shared.
Roberts faces a first-degree premeditated murder count plus a felony firearm count. Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said officers were sent to the Dorset Avenue house on Oct. 19 after a teenage sister reported blood and what she believed were bullet holes. Trey Roberts was dead in the kitchen when they arrived.
Detectives recovered 17 spent 9mm casings at the scene, and a homemade gun was later found in a car that belonged to Breylon Roberts. Ballistic tests matched that weapon to the scene evidence, Barren said, and a camera next door recorded 17 shots before the younger brother was seen walking out.
Family members and friends told investigators the brothers had clashed for years, Barren said, and envy over how well the older brother was doing at his job surfaced again and again as a motive.
The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office filed the charges. A first-degree premeditated murder conviction carries life in prison without parole in Michigan. Roberts remains jailed without bond and returns to court Nov. 5.
