St. Elizabeth Parish Merges Into Nativity of Our Lord in Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. — St. Elizabeth Parish on Detroit’s east side is folding into Nativity of Our Lord Parish this week, and the St. Elizabeth church building will no longer serve as a Catholic church once the change takes hold on Monday, Nov. 2.

Members of the receiving east side congregation gathered for Sunday service on Nov. 1, with the Nativity of Our Lord church set to absorb newcomers from St. Elizabeth, the Archdiocese of Detroit said.

Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger signed two decrees on Oct. 7 after the administrator of St. Elizabeth Parish asked for the move and the archdiocese consulted its Presbyteral Council. One decree merges the parish into Nativity of Our Lord Parish. The other decree relegates the St. Elizabeth church to secular use, which means the building is decommissioned and closed for worship.

Both decisions take effect November 2, 2026. Members who want details on the decrees can reach the Chancellor’s Office of the archdiocese, which has its headquarters at 12 State Street in Detroit.
