SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Westbound I-696 is open again between I-75 in Hazel Park and M-10, the Lodge Freeway, in Southfield, Mich., in Metro Detroit, after Michigan Department of Transportation crews moved traffic back onto the newly reconstructed westbound lanes over the weekend.
The work is another phase of the Restore the Reuther project, and MDOT says this is the second to last step for the I-696 project. For more than a year, the eastbound lanes between I-75 and the Lodge have been closed.
The freeway and all its ramps between the two highways were closed from 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, and almost all westbound ramps reopened Monday.
Two connections remain shut. The off ramp to Woodward Avenue will remain closed until Saturday, Oct. 17, while crews continue resurfacing work on the service drive at westbound 10 Mile Road. The Campbell/Hilton on ramp to WB I-696 is also closed for another week.
Eastbound I-696 from M-10 to I-75 stays closed through late 2026, with a detour using southbound M-10 to eastbound M-8 (Davison) to northbound I-75. Church Street over I-696 is also closed through late 2026.
