DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Pistons spent the offseason chasing one thing, better outside shooting, and two games into the season the plan is showing up on the scoreboard.
Last season Detroit won 60 games despite ranking 28th in the league in made threes and 17th in accuracy at 35.6%, a weakness that hurt in a second-round playoff exit. The front office answered by trading for John Collins, Isaiah Joe and Taurean Prince, who all shot better than 40% from deep last season. Prince has not played yet.
The results have come fast. Detroit hit 15 of 40 tries from long range in the opener against Boston, a game in which it had to rally from 22 points down, then made 18 of 38 in Friday’s 128-111 win at Kaseya Center in Miami, the first stop of a three-game road trip, matching its single-game high from all of last season. The Pistons took 38 or more threes only nine times a year ago and have done it in both games so far.
Duncan Robinson has made five threes in each game, and through two games the Pistons rank third in made threes and second in percentage. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff said creating that space was a summer priority. Detroit went 30-4 last regular season when it made at least 12 threes.
