Character

University District has long been one of the more stable and professionally oriented residential neighborhoods in northwest Detroit, in large part because of the employment anchor provided by the University of Detroit Mercy and its related healthcare facilities. The housing stock is predominantly 1920s-1940s brick colonials and Tudor-style homes of 1,400 to 2,500 square feet. The University District Community Association coordinates neighborhood improvement, crime watch, and beautification efforts.

History

University District developed in the 1920s as the University of Detroit (now University of Detroit Mercy) expanded its McNichols Road campus, drawing faculty, staff, and professionals to the surrounding residential streets. The neighborhood developed a reputation for stability tied to the university's institutional permanence — a feature that has made it more resilient than surrounding northwest Detroit neighborhoods during the city's long decline.
