DETROIT, Mich. — A Detroit mother is facing a Michigan gun-storage charge after her toddler got hold of a handgun left unsecured at a west-side Detroit home and shot himself in the abdomen.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Amoya Black, 26. Detroit Police arrived Tuesday morning on Evergreen Road near Interstate 96, found the 2-year-old wounded, and got him to a hospital. His condition was critical at first and later improved to stable, relatives and court updates said.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said Black was in the kitchen making breakfast when she heard a sudden bang. A second young child in the house was unhurt. Authorities say the firearm was registered to Black and had been left unsecured in a bedroom.
Black appeared in 36th District Court, posted a personal bond set at fifty thousand dollars, and must return Nov. 12 for the next court step. The count alleges a safe-storage violation on premises under her control where a minor was present and suffered serious injury.
State law generally requires unattended firearms to be unloaded and locked, or secured in a locked container, when a child is reasonably likely to be nearby. The case is still only a charge; Black is presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise.
