Lafayette Park presents a unique urban character — rigorous Miesian modernism in steel, glass, and brick, set within a park landscape that preserves a sense of open space and green environment within walking distance of downtown. The co-op structure means residents own shares in the cooperative rather than individual units, creating an ownership model uncommon in Detroit real estate. The community is notably diverse and professionally oriented, with a strong stewardship ethos around the architectural heritage. The Gratiot-Lafayette Neighborhood Association and co-op board maintain architectural standards that protect the Mies legacy.
History
Lafayette Park was developed beginning in 1956 on land cleared by the city's controversial urban renewal program, which displaced the African-American Paradise Valley neighborhood. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was commissioned to design the development, and the resulting complex — completed in phases through the early 1960s — became an international benchmark for modern residential architecture. It was one of America's first racially integrated residential developments by design. The development is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
