Character

Woodbridge presents Detroit's most eclectic architectural streetscape — blocks of Queen Anne, Italianate, and Folk Victorian cottages from the 1880s-1900s in a range of restoration states from meticulously preserved to requiring work. The Woodbridge Neighborhood Association has championed preservation since the 1970s and maintains the National Register listing. The neighborhood draws Wayne State students, faculty, artists, and professionals who value historic character and Midtown walkability. It functions as a quieter, residential counterpart to the more commercial Midtown scene.

History

Woodbridge was developed as one of Detroit's first planned suburban extensions in the late 1870s-1880s, laid out on farmland west of the growing city. The neighborhood reached peak development by 1910, when it was a fashionable middle-class address. Subsequent decline was significant in the mid-20th century, but preservation advocates — organized through the Woodbridge Neighborhood Association — successfully fought for National Register designation and rehabilitation programs starting in the 1970s.
